At times, while touring the Old City of Tzfat, it can seem as if one is being drawn into a time tunnel, going back into the past. Here are the quaint old cobblestone lanes, and the personalities that one can encounter are reminiscent of special figures from long ago. The clear mountain air, and stories of the holy Kabbalists who once lived here, seemingly take us back 500 years to the time of the Ari, a further 2000 years back to the time of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai, and then yet a further 4000 years to the time of our forefathers, the Patriarchs.
During the tour we will walk through the old lanes. We will stop by the ancient synagogues and by the homes of the great Kabbalists.
The guide will speak to the group in a lively, partly theatrical way, captivating the interest of both children and adults. He will retell the stories of the great Kabbalists who once lived in Tzfat. He will speak of how Ya'acov Avinu, our forefather Jacob, dwelled in Tzfat, studying Kabbalah for 14 years in the cave of Shem and Ever, upon his escape from Esav, en route to his eventual sojourn with Lavan. We will learn of the angel who appeared to Rav Yosef Karo, revealing to him the future. How the Abuhav Synagogue, through the power of Kabbalah, flew from Spain to Tzfat, and who Grandma Yocheved was, the woman who prepared a cup of tea every day for the Mashiach, the Messiah, awaiting his arrival. We will learn about the elderly sage who revealed to the parents of the holy Ari that they will one day bear a son who will be great in the Torah of Kabbalah. And towards the end, we will hear a Tzfat love story from 500 years ago, in the synagogue of the Alsheich HaKadosh.
